Diabetic ketoacidosis is a common initial presenting complication of type I DM. It is the consequence when stress increases insulin requirements. Low insulin, hence, low glucose available so metabolism shifts to fat breakdown & increases in ketogenesis from free fatty acids making ketone bodies. Life-threatening complications include mucormycosis, Rhizopus, cerebral edema, cardiac arrhythmias, & heart failure.
